Der aktuelle Jazz wird auf mancherlei Weise bezeichnet – ein herausragendes Jazzalbum jedoch nur auf eine Art: “Herausragende Leistung” in bezug auf die mitwirkenden Musiker. Liest man die Besetzungsliste, muss man erkennen, dass dieses Kriterium erfüllt wurde. Mehr noch, die Musik des Albums offenbart ein perfektes Beispiel von interaktivem Verständnis der Spitzenklasse zwischen allen Beteiligten und zeugt von höchstem Interpretationsvermögen. Haerters meisterhafte Beherrschung der Gitarre gibt der Musik zusätzliche Tiefenwirkung. Er ist sich der Möglichkeiten seines Instruments bewusst und spielt es mit Energie und bewundernswerter technischer Brillanz. Seine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Trompeter Eric Truffaz erinnert oberflächlich an die einst von Miles Davis vorgegebene Richtung, bei genauem Zuhören erweist sich diese Musik jedoch als von vielen alten, neuen und neuesten Tendenzen inspiriert. Dies wird umso deutlicher, wenn einer der involvierten Tenorsxofonisten seinen Teil beisteuert. Selten hat man Michael Brecker derart ungehemmt und technisch sowie musikalisch überzeugend gehört. Andereseits muss Dewey Redmans ungemein gefühlvoll interpretierte Komposition “I still love you” des Bassisten Bänz Oester als herausragende Rarität des Balladenspiels bezeichnet werden. Die Musik von “Cat Scan” wird selbst den kritischsten Hörer absolut überzeugen. Für den Neuling dieserart Jazz öffnet sie die Tür zu neuen, frischen und aufregenden Klängen innerhalb dessen, was heute als “Jazz” die Runde macht – einfach gefasst in die Worte “Herausragende Leistung”. Today’s jazz suggets many terms of expression – outstanding jazz albums deserve but one: “Displayed excellence” – in regard to the featured musicians. According to the line-up mentioned above, this particular requirement is definitely fulfilled. The music on this album is a perfect example of mutual understanding in between top-notch jazz musicians. No matter which of the participants is involved, the inter-action between them is right out overwhelming. The way the material is dealt with points towards an incredible high level of performance. Haerters mastery of the guitar adds an unusual flavor of depth. The consciousness of his instrument’s range and possibilities as well as his brilliant technical abundance are amazing. His cooperation with trumpeter Eric Truffaz may at first appear like a most valid continuation of the direction once set by Miles Davis, however, the inspirations to their music come from many different old, new and newest developments, a fact also recognized when each of the tenor saxophonists enter the picture. Rarely has one heard a Michael Brecker cutting loose to this extent of total abandon – on the other hand, Dewey Redmans articulate and soulful rendition of bassist Bänz Oesters ballad “I still love you” turns out to be a true tonal poem of rare beauty. The music on “Cat Scan” will create excitement and total appreciation by the discerning listener with an open mind. To the newcomer, this album will open doors to new and fresh approaches towards what is generally called “jazz” – but can conceptually be simply interpreted by “displayed excellence”.
